HOW TO GET ‘INSTASKIN’

Baking, juicy, dewy dumpling… The new wave of glow-giving makeup trends sound better suited to a cookery contest, but they’re surprisingly wearable if you follow these tips from the experts who helped them go viral.

Makeup Courses Sydney

Instagram has a lot to answer for. Alongside endless selfies and an avocado-lanche of #foodporn are a wave of beauty trends that, more often than not, leave us in a state of confusion. We searched through them all to find four of the top makeup trends for skin in their latest incarnations, adding our own ‘real life’ filter.

Flashbulb skin

Done correctly, this update on ‘strobing’ (a highlighting technique that makes skin look as though it has been lit by strobe lighting) lends a warm and flattering glow to skin. “It’s about precision highlighting,” says makeup artist Nikki Wolff, who reveals that going small with your brushes is the key; a fluffy eyeshadow brush is ideal. “People tend to apply highlighter over their entire cheekbones, but unless you have perfect skin, it’s better to highlight certain points along the cheekbones instead,” adds Wolff.

Baking lite

Celebrity makeup artist and Laura Mercier brand ambassador Mario Dedivanovic describes baking as “a very old makeup technique to create a flawless complexion”, which swept the internet when he showcased it on Kim Kardashian West. His update on the look still involves brightening under the eyes with concealer to counteract dark circles and hide fine lines, but where with baking you would then ‘set’ your concealer with powder and a damp sponge, ‘baking lite’ requires a lighter touch. “Apply your powder with a brush rather than packing it on with a sponge,” advises Dedivanovic. “This will make it work for real life.”

Juicy skin

‘Juicy skin’ is described by Shiseido Global Color Artist Patrick Ta as “a glamorous but wearable highlighted look”. This modern incarnation of ‘glass skin’ – a K-Beauty trend for skin that is as poreless, reflective and translucent as a sheet of glass – looks like it’s brimming with health. According to Ta: “It’s skin that looks alive and has dimension. I like to mix foundation with face oil for a super-natural base. Next is a touch of blush, followed by a highlighter, which I’ll apply to the forehead, cheekbones and tip of the nose for that high-shine, ‘juicy’ finish.”

Dewy dumpling skin

“Dumplings are moist, plump and delicious; just like perfect skin,” explains makeup artist Nam Vo, who coined the term #dewydumplings. While contouring sculpts features by accentuating shadowy spots on the face – such as the hollows of the cheeks – in a shade darker than your skin tone, the ‘dewy dumpling’ look brings light and shine to balance everything out. “The finished look may look glowy, but I counter the highlighter with contour,” Vo explains. “Chisel in the forehead, cheeks, nose and jawline with a contour product before going in with highlighter. Make sure to hit the highs of your cheekbones, which is a good place to accentuate, as almost no one breaks out there.”

The Academy For Makeup Artists runs several makeup artist courses in all areas of makeup and hairstyling. Enrolments are currently underway for our 2019 intake.
