Diploma of Applied Makeup
Duration: 22 weeks day time study 2 days per week
Days: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9:30am - 4:30pm

This course comprises of 11 modules and has been designed to provide students with the skills and technical ability to work as a professional makeup artist in film, TV, theatre, fashion and special FX makeup.

Diploma Modules
BEAUTY MAKE-UP
In this module, you will study the fundamentals of make-up, including facial anatomy, health and safety practises, skin care, the correct use of tools and products, the principles of lighting and shading in make-up, as well as colour mixing and blending, the application of bases, and beauty make-up for day and evening. You will also cover bridal make-up, corrective make-up (contouring and face shaping), and the make-up techniques required for photographic work.
PERIOD MAKE-UP
You will learn how to research and use reference photos to create period looks and period make-up for Film, TV, and Theatre. Periods covered will include the Eighteenth Century, the 1920s, the 1930s, the 1940s, the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
FASHION MAKE-UP
This module teaches you how to perfect techniques for Commercial, Editorial and Runway work. Guest tutors will teach you how to interpret a concept ensuring you understand how to follow a brief and have a good understanding and knowledge of working with other creatives.
STAGE & CHARACTER
When a character needs to age or even change gender in Film, TV and Theatre, the make-up artist must have a good range of skills such as knowing how to apply drag makeup, stage makeup for theatrical productions and face painting for face decals. In this module you will also learn how to apply facial hair and stubble.
HAIRSTYLING
Knowing how to do hair is a big advantage as a makeup artist. This module includes using electrical equipment such as tongs, heated rollers and straighteners to style long hair, do bridal styles, braiding and plaiting, as well as gaining knowledge of a variety of hair products and how best to apply them.
PORTFOLIO PHOTO SHOOT
The portfolio photo shoot module prepares each student for a professional photo shoot with professioanl models. Each student chooses different makeup looks to apply to their model and receives beautiful high resolution images for their portfolio.
CASUALTY/MOULAGE
In this module we will teach you how to makeup and apply materials to create wounds associated with fighting, car accidents, war zones and bomb blasts. We take you from minor injuries through to major trauma such as limb amputation and evisceration. We will teach you how to create bruises, skin diseases, grazes, cuts, scars, bullet holes, embedded objects, puncture wounds, fractures, knife wounds, slits and more! Not for the faint hearted!
LIFE CASTING
In this module students learn lifecasting and make a three-dimensional copy of a living human body through the use of molding and casting techniques. Lifecasts are used in movies due to the very fine detail and realism that it provides. Students learn to scuplt and mould there lifecast project over several weeks to present in the final module for their creative piece.
BALD CAPS
Learn how to make and apply a bald cap like the experts! Colur for effect and create your own character.
CHARACTER & HAIR
In this module students learn how to age a character, make a character look tired, sick and dirty! Students then learn how to apply lace and crepe hair for effect and apply rotten teeth!
SCRIPT BREAKDOWN/ PRE-PRODUCTION FILM SET
Learn how to analyse a character, determine makeup changes according to the script and understand how to prioritize the makeup department during pre-production. This module provides essential skills for students wanting to work in film and TV.
PROSTHETICS & 3D TRANSFERS
Design, make and apply a range of prosthetic pieces and 3D transfers. This module also covers the theory of prosthetics and working procedures, airbushing, health and safety practices, sculpting and the application of pieces with make-up to achieve a final finished creative piece of your choice.
GRAND FINALE SHOWCASE
Students create a character and bring it to life! This final module showcases 1 makeup look as designed by the student to show to a panel of leading industry creatives.
ASSIGNMENTS
Module A
This assignment delves further into collaborating with other artists and what it takes to get work published. Students will work on a brief given and demonstrate their interpretation of mood, concept and styling. Students will design and apply makeup for submission to the magazine of their choice.
Get valuable feedback on your portfolio of work and your areas of strength from a leading makeup artist.
Module B
This assignment has been designed to push students creatively and strengthen their own personal style while also inspire them to create new trends. Students will learn techniques for geometric patterns, face jewel application and abstract makeup art.
Students are challenged to create a new trend and apply to their model. Students are given valuable feedback from one of Australia's leading makeup artist's.
Module C
This assignment covers makeup for TV, commercial work and working in editorial. Students are asked to design and apply makeup according to a brief.
Valuable feedback is provided on work ethic and professionalism. Students are given advice on portfolio presentation and approaching agents.
Module D
This assignment focus's on research and character creation. Students are given a character from a srcript and then need to desgin a mood board to demonstrate the makeup and mood for the character. Students design and apply makeup to create their character.
All students are required to do a minimum amount of work experience hours to be eligible for the work placement program.
