Name: Jessica Lyons Age:30 I am from Co.Kerry in Ireland but have been living in Australia for nearly 5 years I currently work as a dermal therapist at Peach Cosmetic Medicine in Paddington NSW doing skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, peels, laser hair removal, IPL photo rejuvenation, and skin needling treatments. I love everything about make up. I like that you can express yourself with different looks and that everyone has their own unique style. Make up is meant to be fun and I like to think there are no rules when it come to playing with make up. Achievements: When I was in my early 20's I started my own styling business with my twin sister which we ran for four years before I came to Australia and that was challenging and rewarding. While doing this I discovered my love for beauty and makeup and went back to study beauty therapy. When I was 18 I was the Kerry rose in the international Rose of Tralee festival which was great fun! My most recent achievement is starting my new blog based on skincare, beauty and make up.Course: I did the intensive bridal make up course with TAFMUA over two days and loved every minute. I have also attended the smokey eye masterclass course and will be back to do more in the future.Goals for the future: I would like to continue working with skin but also incorporate makeup artistry into my work. I love seeing people reach their skincare goals and I get very excited when I see people's transformation after a make up application. I would like to branch out into bridal make up and eventually this be my full time career. How did The Academy For Makeup Artists start?

In my late twenties I studied makeup with the legendary Richard Sharah who gave me so much insight into the technical and creative elements of makeup design. I'd done a couple of makeup courses before studying with Richard but they didn't really compare.

I started The Academy For Makeup Artists because I felt that the right courses were not being offered in makeup education.

All of my courses have been designed to provide each student with the theory and technique required to work as a professional makeup artist. The focus is on providing very high quality content to give students job ready skills and confidence upon completing a course.

My courses suit a variety of personal requirements and they are also available after hours and throughout the school holidays so that people can fulfill their ongoing obligations and study at the same time.

My students are high school students, uni students, stay at home mums, working mums and professionals from a variety of industries. Everyone has different goals, time frames and requirements for studying makeup and I wanted to address that.

Why Would You Recommend A Course At The Academy For Makeup Artists?

I consistently receive excellent feedback from every student that completes a course at TAFMUA.

The course content is comprehensive in theory and technique, we teach to exceed professional industry standards and I provide the best cosmetics and tools for my students to use during their course.

I have also employed two very talented teachers that are not just highly qualified but extremely passionate educators that provide an inspiring and supportive learning environment.

We are an industry recognised academy and provide certificates to each student upon completion of their course as well as a transcript of subjects studied to put in their resume.

The small class sizes ensure that each student is able to ask questions specifically relating to them and get one to one attention. I also provide ongoing career support and assistance with work experience to each student that has completed a course with TAFMUA.

What do you think about the recent major changes to the Diploma of Specialist Makeup Services?

As I understand it the changes mean that the Diploma will put more emphasis on providing skills for Theatre, Film, Special FX, Wig Making and working as a technician.

Most people may not be aware but Certificate IV in Makeup has recently been superseded and is no longer a qualification. Although the Diploma will now incorporate units of competency from the previous Certificate IV in Makeup students only really have the option of studying makeup for a year and paying in excess of $19,000 in the VET system.

We find that a lot of students really want to specialise in Beauty, Bridal, Fashion and Editorial Makeup and those areas are no longer a focus for other schools.

Luckily those changes have had a positive impact on my school! The courses that I have created range in 2 days to 8 weeks duration and are $575 - $4990 in price.

We are proudly non-accredited which means that I can continue to provide courses and subjects that students want and customise accordingly.

What is next for TAFMUA?

I am still really keen to run my courses online but I want to do it in a way that doesn't compromise the quality of learning and support. The students that do face to face classes have the added advantage of using all of the amazing products that we supply and without access to these products I feel that the student would be unfairly disadvantaged. Once I figure out a way to implement high quality online learning for makeup education I will be doing it!

What do you do in your spare time?

I never have spare time! Any free time is spent with my two little boys who I cherish and adore. My 3 year old son said he was going to buy me makeup for my birthday the other day!

The Academy For Makeup Artists is holding an open day Sunday May 17th 2015 from 12-2pm. Candice will be in attendance to chat to prospective students and parents.

Candice holds a Diploma of Business Marketing and Certificate IV in Training & Assessment. Her personal interests include music, theatre, technology, education and makeup. To get in contact with Candice email candice@tafmua.com.au
