What are the qualities of a great makeup artist? That’s an excellent question, with probably a wider variety of answers than you’d expect. That being said, here are several possibilities to consider.

Compatibility

If the client and the makeup artist are not compatible, the session could very well be a disastrous one. Everyone’s personality is different. A great makeup artist needs to have the patience to be compatible with all types of people, even when those people are a challenge.

Professionalism

Professionalism is a must, in any industry. There is absolutely no excuse to be unprofessional. Un-professionalism is the best way to guarantee that clients will seek services elsewhere.

Reliable Skills

Exhibiting reliable skills is an excellent way to build client confidence. It is also a good way to get word-of-mouth business. Show off your skills in a portfolio. The more variety you show, the better.

It goes without saying that without skills, you probably won’t get far in the industry.

Good Listener

There will always be those clients who know what they want, but have difficulty expressing it to the makeup artist. Being a good listener is beneficial in realizing what the client is trying to convey, without the possibility of misunderstandings.

Ability to Work Quickly

Many times clients won’t have the time to spend even one hour in the chair. Schedules are that hectic. That’s why it’s extremely important for great makeup artists to have the ability to work quickly without making mistakes.

Creativity

Most makeup artists are somewhat creative, even before making the final decision to get into the beauty field. Without creativity, this occupation becomes boring quickly. Not only that, the job in itself is very difficult to do.

Willingness to Learn

The beauty industry is one that is ever-changing. A great makeup artist needs additional education beyond basic classes, in order to keep abreast of all of the latest news and trends. It’s the only way to keep building a client base.

Flexibility

Unfortunately, emergencies are a way of life. They can happen to anyone. The ability to be flexible, means that a makeup artist has no problem filling in during emergencies, which occur on weekends and during the evening.

As mentioned earlier, everyone has their own opinion in regard to the qualities that make a great makeup artist. Chances are, you won’t find all of these qualities in one individual. However, they are things that every aspiring makeup artist should strive for.
